Gem Sugilite is a rare purple mineral that is found only in South Africa. Sugilite crystals are rarely found and it is mostly seen as a cut stone. The bright purple color of sugilite is a result of an association with manganese. It has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5.
Sugilite was first discovered in 1944 by the professor Ken-ichi Sugi (1901-1948) for an occurrence he described on Iwagi Islet, Japan.
